Having a golden retriever doesn’t mean your home has to have mud on the floors and hair on the couch. Our beloved goldens or notorious for tracking in dirt and shedding profusely. Although living among the hair can be a bit much, many will agree goldens are so worth it.

So let’s go over how to keep your home clean with a golden retriever?

Vacuum: Roomba, Dyson, Bissell

The vacuum is number one on the list for a reason. I often refer to mine as my best friend that keeps giving. I have an I7 Roomba that handles golden retriever shed just fine. We run our Roomba daily to help keep up with the shedding. The I7 Roomba will undock, run and dock itself and empty the bin all on its own! Then it will start up again. The Roomba will also map your house, so it knows where to start and stop. We can not say enough about having a Roomba to help battle the shedding.

Below you will find our go to vacuums to control your goldens retrievers shedding. The Roomba, along with either the Dyson or Bissell is a good combo for getting the job done. The Dyson Cordless works excellent for hair on stairs or furniture.

Rug Rake

This is a great tool to quickly clean up the fur that seems to pile up on top of the carpet. It’s also good for reaching under furniture and raking out the fur that found its way under the couch. The Rug Rake is a great tool to do a quick clean up your in a pinch. It’s nice to have a tool to use quickly when you realize how much dog fur you can see on you’re area rug right before your doorbell rings! No time to pull the vacuum out grab your rug rake. We also use the rug rake in between our full vacuum days

Dryer Sheets

You might be wondering why in world and I’m talking about dryer sheets! Have you cleaned your dryer filter lately.?! Let’s be honest about how much dog fur is in there! Well, this is why dryer sheets for pet owners made the cut. Drying your clothes while using dryer sheets will help remove all the dog hair from your clean clothes.

Swifter Pet Hair Duster

The Swiffer pet hair duster is always great to have on hand.  It’s unbelievable where you will find your golden retriever’s hair. I use these to clean up hair on my stairs railings and stairs or a quick sweep of side tables and so much more. They pick up a lot of hair rather quickly.

Furniture Rollers

A pet hair furniture roller is an excellent tool for a quick clean up. If you have guests arriving and spot some dog hair on the furniture and no time to pull the vacuum cleaner grab the furniture roller. You can be confident your friends and family can sit on your furniture and not leave with half your dog stuck to their clothing.

Lint Rollers

Having a stockpile of extra sticky lint rollers for dog hair is the absolute must if you own a golden retriever. You can keep these hanging on your key holder, coat rank, or even on your doorknob to help you remember to grab the roller to and remove some of the dog hair before you head out. Get some string and run it through the handle hole, and you can hang it anywhere. What works for us is keeping it by the back door. We use it every time we’re heading out.

Dog Dryer

We recommend getting your dog a high power blow dryer. The dryer is excellent for blowing all the loose fur out and reduce the amount of dog hair in your home. It will also ensure that your dog is getting completely dry. Leaving your dog wet or damp close to the skin can cause skin issues that will lead to more itching and shedding.

Broom & Dustpan Combo with Comb

Typically when you sweep up your golden retriever’s hair, it kind of causes more of a mess, but this little broom and dustpan combo really does the trick for cleaning up the piles of hair in the corners quickly. The enclosed dustpan stops the hair from going into the air. The comb on the dustpan is a must no bending over to clean brush. Just sweep and clean off the broom on the comb, and all the hair goes right in the dustpan.

Grooming

I know grooming is the number one thing everyone always recommends, so I don’t mean to sound like a broken record, but keeping your dog groomed will help keep the shedding down. I am guilty of not brushing every day. It’s another chore, but one we have to make time for at least a couple of times a week. I am always astounded at the amount of hair that will come off with a simple brushing session.

Grooming Tools

Having the right grooming tools will make the job easier and faster. These are our recommendations for some basic grooming tools every owner should have.

Brushing

As part of our shedding battle, we have as golden retriever owners brushing is an essential part. Make sure you have a brush that is easy on your dog and removes loose fur. Brushing daily is optimum but 2x to 3x a week will help reduce the shedding in your home.

Swiffer Sweeper

The Swiffer sweeper is a must have for reaching those hard to reach spots under couches and tables. The hair will stick to it. You will be amazed when you pull it out from under the sofa and see how much hair is on it. These work great on wood and tile flooring. They are lightweight, quick, and easy to use for a fast clean up.

Swiffer Wet Jet Mop

Goldens are great about leaving muddy or wet paw prints all over the house. We use the Swiffer mop to clean up the paw tracks throughout the house. The Swiffer Wet Jet is safe for all flooring, including wood flooring. You can get wood flooring cleaning solution or use the presoaked mopping pads or a washable pad that can be used over and over. This is my choice on my wood floors so I can control the amount of cleaner going on the floor.

Groom Goldens Feet

Those muddy or wet paw tracks are mainly caused by the hair that grows on the bottom of their paws. This pretty much happens overnight well; it seems like overnight. Before I realize my little guy needed his paw fur trimmed. The hair on the bottom of their paws tracks in grass and wetness. Keep up with the paw grooming game can save you a lot of sweeping and mopping.

Skin Health (itching)

Making sure your golden has healthy balance skin will help reduce the amount of hair left in your house. If your golden is suffering from a hot spot, yeast skin infection or just dry skin in general the scratching will increase. If you have ever seen your golden get in a good scratch you know the amount of hair that flies off. So if you can try to keep your dogs itch-free and scratching episodes to a minimum to help reduce the amount of hair left on your floor. This shampoo was hands down a game changer on the itching and odors.

Grooming Gloves

Adding a pair of grooming gloves to your arsenal is a must. Grooming gloves make bathing and grooming a good experience. We use our grooming gloves during both or even wear these when we’re outside playing and I just give him a quick rub it’s nothing high stress for him he actually enjoys it. The gloves also provide and nice message that you golden will love.

Air Purifier

I added an air purifier to the list because we all want clean air in our home and as you know golden retrievers are not hypoallergenic. If you suffer from allergies adding an air purifier may help with that. We find running the air purifier after vacuuming helps eliminate some of the dust and dander that often gets airborne when you vacuum the thick carpet.

Rubber Hair Removal Brush

The rubber magnet brush is great to keep in your car in the event that some hair did escape the house and make its way into your car or perhaps your golden likes to go for a drive. My golden retriever jumps in every chance he can so we also battle the hair in our vehical. These can also be used for your dog or the couch and chairs to remove unwanted pet hair. This is a great versatile tool to have on hand.

Carpet Cleaner Vacuum

We also have a Bissell carpet shampooer. This is something you should probably put on your long-term list of cleaning tools. It was time to have the carpets cleaned after having my dog for a year. We decided to purchase instead of renting due to the likelihood we would need to use it again in the near future. The Bissell carpet cleaner worked fantastically and removed the stains with 1 to 2 passes over the stained areas.

Baby Gates

Baby gates are perfect for a lot of reasons. They can help keep your dog in a doggy safe room or keep them in space until you can wash or groom them. Or maybe your dog has free roamed of the entire house, but one room or two rooms are off-limits well they are great for that too. I use one in my office because I didn’t want to have to live in the office with the door shut, but the room wasn’t completely dog proof at first. So we use a baby gate to keep out golden out of that particular room.

Choose One

Suppose I had only to pick one, which is impossible because you really need multiple cleaning tools to make life with a golden retriever easier. In a world that I had to pick one, I would definitely go with this Roomba. It makes the most significant difference without me having to actually use it. I turn it on and let it run, and on the days it doesn’t run, there is a noticeable amount of hair on the floor. It can also be controlled from your phone you can set it up through their app. Roomba is the one cleaning tool I can’t live without on a daily basis.
